I googed and found that my "cannot open display" problem is a common problem, and different experts give different advice, for different situations, such as using SSH, using VNC, using X11 etc.
What I did to get the display is the following.
1. startx to start an X session.
2. use the LXTerminal to give the following command.
./convexhull.
Actually I don't know what exactly startx do. So I need to google further.
